Twenty-two cars, all of which had to be entirely new or significantly updated to qualify, were judged on six criteria: design advancement, engineering, efficiency, safety, value, and performance,
CNN Money reported.
Motor Trend's judges cited the car's "responsive powertrains and masterful balance of smooth ride and sporty handling," in their decision to make the Cadillac CTS their top car this year.
"The signature achievement is the successful extension of the 'light blade,' as Cadillac calls it, up the front fender and down into the front fascia, creating an unmistakable look as easily identifiable in a rearview mirror as when you're standing in front of it,"
Motor Trend reported. "Again, we put Germany on notice: America's coming."
The "again" reference is to the fact that this is the second time in six years the Cadillac CTS has come away with the title, having been named Car of the Year by Motor Trend in 2008.
"The CTS's intended function was to take the fight to BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi — and win. And it has," the magazine added in its review of the Cadillac.
Referring the Cadillac CTS' driving dynamics, Motor Trend Editor-in-Chief Ed Loh said in an online video, "The whole range felt light, smooth, and responsive thanks to a near fifty-fifty weight balance, and curve weight that is hundreds of pounds less than the competition."
"This is definitely not your granddaddy's Caddie," Loh added. "The bottom line is the CTS simply excels at being a luxury sedan."
The first Cadillac to offer an eight-speed transmission, the CTS is available with a 272-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder power plant, a 321-horsepower V6 and a 420-horsepower turbocharged V6, CNN noted.
