Candace Cameron Bure, child star from "Full House," defended an Oregon bakery that refused to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding on Tuesday's episode of "The View," raising the ire of cohost and fellow child star Raven-Symoné.
"The Oregon law bars businesses from discriminating against sexual orientation, race, disability, age or religion. And, to me, it’s the same thing they did back in the day, saying that black people couldn’t do something because 'it’s my religious belief,'" Raven-Symoné said of the bakers,
according to "Entertainment Tonight."
"I think you're comparing apples to oranges here," Cameron-Bure said in response. "I don’t think this is discrimination at all. This is about freedom of association. It's about constitutional rights. It's about First Amendment rights. It's about having the right to still choose who we associate with."
She went on to point out that the bakery, Sweet Cakes by Melissa, had actually served the couple before, and that was only the wedding ceremony they objected to being a part of.
"[The bakery] didn't refuse to bake the cake because of [the couple's] sexual orientation," she said. "In fact, they baked cakes for them previously. They had a problem with the actual ceremony because that — the ceremony — is what conflicted with their religious beliefs."
Aaron and Melissa Klein, the owners of the bakery, were fined $135,000 for their refusal to serve the lesbian couple. After receiving the fine, they vowed to appeal it.
"We will not give up this fight, and we will not be silenced," they said. "We stand for God’s truth, God’s word and freedom for all Americans."
