As a former New York City police officer accused of plotting to kidnap, murder, cook, and devour women sat in the courtroom, his wife took the witness stand on the opening day of his trial and recounted her horrific discovery that her husband was plotting to dine on her and her friends.
Kathleen Mangan-Valle, 27, the spouse of Gilberto Valle, dubbed the "cannibal cop," broke down in sobs multiple times and had to leave the stand twice because she was so overwhelmed with emotion.
“I was going to be tied up by my feet and my throat slit, and they were going to have fun watching the blood gush out of me because I was young,” Mangan-Valle testified, according to the
New York Post.
She said her husband, a six-year veteran of the New York Police Department, and his unnamed New Jersey accomplice went as far as to plan how to keep women quiet during the murders.
"Gil just said, 'It's OK. We'll just gag her,'" Mangan-Valle testified regarding online conversations she found. "I was going to be stuffed in a suitcase."
Mangan-Valle discovered the plot, she said, when she opened her husband's laptop while he was still logged in to a website called "darkfetishnet."
She said her husband planned to burn her and her friends alive.
“He talked about devising an apparatus so the girls could be on the spit for 30-minute shifts and be taken down so they would live longer,” she said. “The suffering was for his enjoyment, and he wanted to make it last as long as possible.”
In its opening statement, the prosecution said Valle planned to kidnap and consume his wife “in order to satisfy a deeply held desire he had to cannibalize human flesh.”
Defense attorneys argued in their opening statements that Valle's online chats were “preposterous, infantile chatter,” and they were fantasies that would never come to fruition.
In February 2012, Valle reportedly negotiated to kidnap a woman for someone else for $5,000. He also allegedly used a police database to target women he thought would be prime targets for abduction. Valle could face life in prison if convicted.
