Caroline Kennedy on Japan Ambassador Role: 'Honored to Carry on Legacy'

Caroline Kennedy found a friendly, bipartisan crowd during her confirmation hearing for her ambassador to Japan position Thursday, appearing before the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee.

Kennedy, the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, was greeted with platitudes and tributes during the hearing, which made it seem like Congress’ decision to make her an ambassador will be unanimous — a rarity in Congress these days.

"I look forward to your service," Republican Sen. Bob Corker told the New York Daily News. "You have a good sense of what our national interests are, and I think you will be a great ambassador to Japan and that your family is willing to do that."

"She grew up in the public eye, and we grew up with her," Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer said. "[Kennedy] will show the power and potential of women in public service."

The Daily News reported Kennedy attended the hearing with Victoria Kennedy, widow of her uncle, former Sen. Edward Kennedy. Caroline Kennedy's husband Edwin Schlossberg and two of her three children were present as well.

Kennedy said her father was dedicated to public service, which sparked her interest as well.

"I will be humbled to carry on his legacy in a small way," she told the committee.

She was nominated by President Barack Obama for the Japanese ambassador post. Kennedy, an attorney and a best-selling book author, would be the first woman in the post, according to The Associated Press. Kennedy would replace Silicon Valley attorney and Obama fundraiser John Roos.

Kennedy helped introduce Obama as a Democratic nominee in the 2008 presidential election, throwing her full support behind him over Hillary Rodham Clinton.

If approved, Kennedy would follow in the footsteps of her grandfather Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., who was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's ambassador to Britain, and aunt Jean Kennedy Smith, who served as ambassador to Ireland under President Bill Clinton.
