A cat survived a move to Hawaii from Virginia after disappearing on moving day, spending 36 days in a box with no food or water.
The cat, named Mee Moowe, was barely alive when the boxes were delivered, but had
enough voice to meow, owner Ashley Barth told WAVY.
Mee Moowe disappeared while movers were packing, and the family even delayed their departure by three days waiting for her to show up, Barth said. They finally had to leave, and Barth told the station her daughters were “devastated.”
But when the boxes were delivered, Barth told WAVY she thought she heard a “meow” and one of the movers said, “What was that sound?”
“My heart just kind of sunk for a minute and I thought, ‘no, no way.’ And then we heard it again. And the guy said, ‘was that a cat?'” Barth said.
When they opened the box, Mee Moowe’s eyes were crusted shut, she had lost half of her body weight, and could barely walk.
The cat is recovering at a vet’s office in Hawaii, in quarantine for three months because vaccinations weren’t completed for the move.
“I was in shock,” Barth told WAVY. “I couldn’t believe it. I think I was grateful that she was alive, but I was furious this happened to her.”
The station contacted vets in Virginia and Hawaii about whether a cat could survive 36 days without food or water and were told it was unlikely, but not impossible. It would depend on the cat’s health, as well as the humidity and temperature in the box.
