Catherine Zeta-Jones: Michael Douglas Thanks Wife at Emmys

By    |   Monday, 23 September 2013 03:38 PM EDT

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, who announced their separation last month, could be rekindling their relationship, as Douglas thanked the Welch-born actress for her support during his acceptance speech at the Emmys, wore his ring, and called her his wife.

Douglas won Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie Sunday night for his role as famed pianist and vocalist Liberace in the HBO film "Behind the Candelabra."

"I want to thank my wife, Catherine, for her support," he said during his speech.

Following the show, Douglas again referred to Zeta-Jones as his wife while speaking to reporters in the press room. He said that he had gotten to know his "Behind the Candelabra" co-star Matt Damon on the set of the movie, "Ocean's Twelve," where he worked with "my wife, Catherine."

Zeta-Jones was across the Pacific participating in a launching ceremony for Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis in China, Fox News reported.

Representatives for the couple told Fox News that both actors were "evaluating" and "working on" their relationship. A source close to the couple told the outlet that "Michael is really in love with Catherine [and] he would do anything for her."

Married since 2000, Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, have struggled with health issues in recent years.

In 2010, Douglas was diagnosed with throat cancer, while Zeta-Jones announced in April that she had again checked herself into a treatment facility for her Bipolar II disorder.

Zeta-Jones was released from the treatment facility in May.

Prior to their August separation announcement, the couple had not been seen in the public together since April 22, when they attended a Barbra Streisand tribute concert, according to People magazine.

In addition to repeatedly referring to his estranged wife, Douglas also mentioned his 34-year-old son Cameron Douglas, who remains behind bars after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute drugs and to heroin possession in 2010.

"If you happen to have a slip, this for a prisoner who is not violent … they punish you," Douglas said.

"In my son's case, he has spent almost two years in solitary confinement, and right now I'm being told I cannot see him for two years. It's been over a year now, and I'm questioning the system," Douglas told reporters gathered backstage. "Obviously, at first I was disappointed with my son, but I've reached a point now where I'm very disappointed with the system."
