U.S. Cellular Field, home of the White Sox, will be renamed Guaranteed Rate Field on Nov. 1, despite many fans wanting something different, like Comiskey Park.
What's in a name? Millions and millions of dollars, judging by stadium naming rights agreements in other cities, but terms of the Chicago deal weren't disclosed.
National mortgage lender Guaranteed Rate reached a 13-year agreement for naming rights to the ballpark, and the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority approved the name change on Wednesday, CBS Chicago reported.
"We are pleased to find, in Guaranteed Rate, a new naming rights partner founded in Chicago by Chicagoans, which shares our commitment to the city and to our fans," said White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.
The name change drew criticism and sparked the #BetterSoxStadiumNames hashtag, which was trending in Chicago, where fans have favored calling the ballpark Comiskey Park, the Chicago Tribune noted.
The park was named U.S. Cellular Field in 2003, and nicknamed "The Cell."
Sox outfielder Adam Eaton told the Tribune he's looking forward to hearing what the fans come up with for a new nickname.
The deal gives Guaranteed Rate, which ranks at No. 8 among national mortgage lenders, significant in-stadium signage, merchandising and community outreach opportunities, the Tribune reported.
"We’re going to put a lot of effort into getting some buzz and having some fun in the stadium," Guaranteed Rate founder Victor Ciardelli told the Tribune. "I hope to bring a lot of fans in. Our market share in Chicago is significant. We really want to use our customer base to drive more people into the ballpark."
Twitter users offered their suggestions for #BetterSoxStadiumNames.
