Channing Tatum may not be starring in "Gambit" after all, even though he was the one to initially convince 20th Century Fox to take on the superhero movie.
The star had been eager to pursue the comic book role and attended Comic-Con in San Diego in character as Remy LeBeau, or Gambit, a New Orleans thief. He wore a “Gambit” T-shirt and sported a hairstyle reflecting that of his anticipated character.
But something has changed. Tatum’s representative from UTA and Management 360 acknowledged that they are still discussing
Tatum’s role in the film but “something is up,” The Wrap reported.
Rupert Wyatt, the film’s director, had been trying actresses, including Lea Seydoux, to star in the film with Tatum. Wyatt has a tight timetable for finding a cast as the move is supposed to be released on Oct. 7, 2016.
Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner, "Gambit's" producers, still plan on shooting the film,
even without Tatum as their leading man, Cinema Blend announced.
The reportedly $154 million move is a risky one,
according to Forbes, because “a Gambit film only makes sense with a movie star of Channing Tatum’s draw. If he walks, 20th Century Fox should give serious thought to just canceling the picture.”
Since the news that Tatum was expected to star in "Gambit," fans have taken to Twitter to express their excitement or disappointment. Now that Tatum may be considering dropping out, the #Gambit tweets have continued to roll in:
Even if Tatum decides to abandon his “Gambit,” role, he may have a new “Ghostbusters” reboot offer to fall back on. Amidst rumors that the “Ghostbusters” crew was considering Tatum and Chris Pratt as co-stars in the film, Drew Pearce, the production’s script writer, admitted that
“that’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project,” MTV reported.
