Chardon, Ohio Father Dies on Second Anniversary of Son's Murder

Chardon, Ohio, father Russell King Sr., whose 17-year-old son Russell King Jr. was killed in an Ohio school shooting in 2012, died Thursday two years to the day after his son's tragic death.

The 48-year-old King was found by a family member lying dead in his bed at his home in Chardon Township, Geauga County Sheriff's Department Lt. John Hiscox told the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.

"It's horrible, just horrible,'' Hiscox said. "I feel for the family, and I feel for the community.''

According to police, there was no sign of foul play at the scene, however the death is still being investigated by a local coroner.

"What happened took an enormous toll on all the families,'' Geauga County Prosecutor James Flaiz told reporters Thursday following the discovery of King's body. "It hit Mr. King as hard or harder than the others. He was extremely close to his son. Seeing the emotional pain on him concerned me.''

On Feb. 27, 2012, King's son Robert was one of three students killed at Chardon High School, located about 35 miles east of Cleveland, when gunman T.J. Lane, then 17, opened fire with a .22-Ruger in the cafeteria before classes began. The other two students who were killed were 16-year-olds Daniel Parmertor and Demetrius Hewlin. An additional two students were wounded in the shooting rampage.

Lane confessed to the shooting and reportedly told prosecutors that he had chosen his victims at random.

Lane pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder, and one count of felonious assault for a shooting, the Cleveland Plain Dealer said.

The 17-year-old shooter had initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, however later changed his plea to guilty.

Despite his guilty plea, Lane remained defiant during his sentencing in March when he reportedly wore a white T-shirt with "KILLER" written in marker across it to the courtroom and gave the middle finger to the victims' families. He is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
