Former pro basketball player Charles Barkley shared his controversial views Thursday about how "unintelligent" black people hold each other back, saying that "we as black people, we are never going to be successful, not because of you white people, but because of other black people."
Barkley spoke openly to Anthony Gargano and Rob Ellis on 94 WIP SportsRadio about a Bleacher Report story that said some Seattle Seahawks teammates think quarterback Russell Wilson isn’t "black enough."
"For some reason, we are brainwashed to think that if you're not a thug, or an idiot, you're not black enough. Why would you hate Russell Wilson?” Barkley said. “Unfortunately, as I tell my white friends, we as black people, we are never going to be successful, not because of you white people, but because of other black people.”
Barkley’s words inspired numerous angry tweets.
Barkley wasn’t shy about expressing his feelings about “acting white.”
“When you are black, you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other black people. Young black kids, when they do well in school, the loser kids tell them, ‘Oh, you're acting white,’” Barkley told 94 WIP. “The kids who speak intelligently, they tell them, ‘Oh, you're acting white.’ We're the only ethnic group that says, hey, if you're going to jail, it gives you street cred. That's just typical BS that goes on when you're black, man.”
Not everyone disagreed with Barkley.
