Charles Oakley was arrested at a casino in Las Vegas over the weekend, and the former New York Knicks All-Star is accused of attempting to cheat, according to multiple reports Thursday.
Oakley was arrested by Nevada Gaming Control Board Enforcement Agents at the Cosmopolitan on Sunday. Oakley was suspected of adding to or reducing his wager on a gambling game after the outcome was known, the gaming board told multiple media outlets.
According to TMZ Sports, Oakley pulled back a $100 chip after he realized he was going to lose.
Oakley, 54, was taken into custody and booked at Clark County Detention Center.
Oakley's violation is considered a Class B felony and carries a sentence of one to six years in state prison and a fine of $10,000 at most if convicted of a first offense.
"This is not a significant matter and we expect it to be resolved quickly," Alex Spiro, Oakley's New York-based attorney, told ESPN.
Oakley last played in the NBA with the Houston Rockets in 2004. He spent 10 of his 19 seasons in the league with the Knicks, earning his sole All-Star selection during the 1993-94 campaign. Oakley, a big man, averaged 9.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for his career.
Oakley was arrested at Madison Square Garden in February 2017 and charged with misdemeanor assault after getting into a spat with security guards after trying to go after Knicks owner James Dolan. The incident received notable attention, with Oakley filing a civil suit alleging defamation and libel against Madison Square Garden and Dolan after agreeing to a plea deal to have his charges dropped.
