Charlize Theron says her black children face racism by living in the U.S. and that she has considered leaving the country for their sake.
Theron, who was raised in South Africa during apartheid, told Elle in an interview she sees similar racism and injustice in America lately.
“I don’t even know how to talk about the last year under our new administration,” she told the magazine. “But racism is much more alive and well than people thought. We can’t deny it anymore. We have to be vocal.”
Theron adopted two children — Jackson, 6, and August, 2 — and co-parents them with her mother.
“There are places in this country where, if I got a job, I wouldn’t take it,” Theron told Elle. “I wouldn’t travel with my kids to some parts of America, and that’s really problematic. There are a lot of times when I look at my kids and I’m like, if this continues, I might have to [leave America.] Because the last thing I want is for my children to feel unsafe.”
While she stated that she wants her kids to be proud of their racial background, she noted the unfairness that “it’s a different climate for them than it is for me,” and said she wants to see that change.
Theron, 42, was interviewed by comedian and vocal Trump critic Chelsea Handler for the Elle piece, in which they talked about motherhood and Theron's recent film role in “Tully,” which focuses on the topic.
Twitter users wondered if she needed help packing and were skeptical of her remarks.
