Cheryl Burke Exits Miss USA Pageant Over Trump Comments

By    |   Wednesday, 01 July 2015 08:36 AM EDT

Upset with Donald Trump's comments on immigrants, "Dancing With the Stars" pro Cheryl Burke dropped out of the Miss USA pageant she was supposed to co-host with MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts – and so did he.

“In light of the recent statements made by Donald Trump and the subsequent decision by NBC to cut ties with Mr. Trump, I cannot in good conscience move forward with participating in this year's Miss USA Pageant as its co-host," she told USA Today.

Effective today I have withdrawn from my duties with Miss USA. Although I will not be there in person, I wish all of the contestants much luck as I know how hard they've all been working over the last year to try and realize their dreams.”

Roberts announced his withdrawal from the show on Twitter and sent his best regards to the contestants:

Burke and Roberts aren't the only hosts to leave the pageant. Roselyn Sanchez and Chrisitan de la Fuente, who were scheduled to host the pageant’s Spanish-language telecast, also abandoned their roles over Trump’s anti-immigration remarks.

Mexico has completely withdrawn from the Miss Universe pageant, prompting NBC, the pageant’s main network, to drop the program.

Univison said it dropped the pageant out of "respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values,” USA Today reported.

“Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” NBC Universal said in a release. The network will air "American Ninja Warrior" in the program’s empty July 12 slot.

“If NBC is so weak and foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/Miss USA will be determined in court,” said Trump.

Trump doubled-down on his comments on Twitter.
