Chet Hanks Runs Racial Gauntlet for Using N-Word to Plug Song

By    |   Wednesday, 03 June 2015 11:44 AM EDT

Aspiring rapper Chet Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, defended his use of the N-word on Instagram this Tuesday, then deleted his account.

"Check out the song me and my n**** @chillthatdude just dropped on my Soundcloud," Hanks wrote over the weekend, referring to his new rap song, "Juice."

The use of the racial slur upset many on the social network, who accused him of being racist, appropriating black culture, bringing to life the parodic movie "Malibu's Most Wanted," and a number of other offenses, VH1 reported.

This, in turn, led Hanks — who goes by the moniker "Chet Haze" — to defend himself with a lengthy screed.

"If I say the word n**** I say it amongst people I love and who love me. If I say 'f*** yall hatin ass n****z' it’s because that’s really how I felt at the time. And I don’t accept society getting to decide what ANYBODY can or can’t say. That’s something we call FREE SPEECH," he wrote.

"Now I understand the older generation who grew up in the Jim Crowe era might have strong feelings against this. And that’s understandable... But what I’m saying is this is 2015 . . . We have also reached a point where the word can no longer have a negative connotation if we so choose. And who is to say only black people can use it? The way I see it, it’s a word that unifies the culture of HIP-HOP across ALL RACES, which is actually kind of a beautiful thing."

By Wednesday, Hanks had deleted his Instagram account. His new, expletive-filled song, "Juice" — about smoking weed and girl-on-girl sex — is still available on SoundCloud. It also features the N-word throughout.

Tom Hanks, on the other hand, continues to make wholesome family-friendly movies and last summer released Hanx Writer, a very twee vintage typewriter app.
