Chicago saw 23 shootings, including two fatalities, take place over the weekend, once again highlighting the city's rising homicide rate.

The most recent incident took place on Sunday morning in the 600 block of North Clifton Avenue in the Uptown neighborhood, when a gunman riding a bicycle reportedly fired several shots at a 33-year-old man sitting inside his vehicle, the Chicago Tribune noted.

The victim died at the scene while the gunman fled in an unknown direction.

Another man was fatally shot on Saturday at around 8 p.m. in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, the Chicago Tribune noted.

The 26-year-old victim was found lying on the sidewalk with gunshots to the back and was rushed to the Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died.

Two hours prior to the shooting, three men aged between 28 and 54, were shot in Seward Park in the 300 block of West Division Street on the Near North Side when three unidentified assailants opened fire on them.

The older men were stabilized at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital but the youngest was reported in critical condition.

Two men, 40 and 41, were shot early Sunday morning while sitting on a porch with friends in the 3000 block of North Drake Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side, the Chicago Tribune said.

The incident reportedly took place when an unidentified gunman walked up to them and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Shortly after that incident, at around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, a 31-year-old man was critically injured in a separate shooting in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

The victim was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

The weekend's events once again bring attention to Chicago's surging rate in violent crimes.

The Pacific Standard noted a 58 percent increase in homicide rates in the city between 2015 and 2016.

Last year President Donald Trump said he was sending federal help to fight crime in Chicago, which he said had reached "epidemic" proportions.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel faced backlash over comments made about the violent outbursts and people in certain ethnic neighborhoods, Fox News said.

"This may not be politically correct but I know the power of what faith and family can do," he said "Our kids need that structure. … I am asking … that we also don't shy away from a full discussion about the importance of family and faith helping to develop and nurture character, self-respect, a value system and a moral compass that allows kids to know good from bad and right from wrong."
