Bags and cups in Chipotle restaurants will feature original work by writers such as Jonathan Safran Foer, Toni Morrison, and George Saunders starting this week.
Foer, author of “Eating Animals,” approached Chipotle CEO Steve Ells with the idea after finding himself at
Chipotle without a book or magazine to occupy him, he told Vanity Fair, whose contributing editor Michael Lewis also provided writing for the restaurant.

Foer told the magazine that he pursued the idea after mulling possible philosophical hang-ups.
“There were things that I had to at least think about, like the fact that they serve meat, and I don’t eat meat,” Foer said. “And the fact that they’re a sizable corporation, and that I don’t tend to get involved with sizable corporations any more than I have to, and the fact that I have no interest in marketing for anyone or endorsing anything.”
He said Chipotle’s reputation for good business practices eased his concerns.
“What interested me is 800,000 Americans of extremely diverse backgrounds having access to good writing,” he told Vanity Fair. “A lot of those people don’t have access to libraries, or bookstores. Something felt very democratic and good about this.”
The idea met with mixed reviews from Twitter users.
