Chris Berman's Father Dies at Age 89, Introduced ESPN Host to Football

Chris Berman's father, James Berman, is dead at 89.

The avid sports fan was credited with introducing football to the now veteran sportscaster at an early age.

The news was released via ESPN's Twitter feed on Monday. The cause of death and date as to when it occurred were not disclosed.



Chris Berman, the 58-year-old sportcaster whose nickname is "Boomer," is known for his signature phrase "he-could-go-all-the-way!"

Berman was reportedly on a leave of absence from ESPN to care for his ailing father toward the end.

Berman started his sportscasting career at Hartford's WVIT-TV and joined ESPN one month after it was founded in 1979. The Greenwich, Conn.-born sportscaster is presently the host of "Monday Night Countdown."

"He is our most important person. He is the face of ESPN," ESPN’s Vice President of Production Norby Williamson, said in 2008, Inquisitr.com reported.

As news of the Berman's father's death spread online, the Twitter condolences came pouring in.
