R&B star Chris Brown has stepped into controversy again with a tweet that suggests the Ebola crisis is a form of population control.
Brown tweeted to his 13.7 million followers: "I don't know ... but I think this Ebola epidemic is a form of population control. S— is getting crazy bruh."
The tweet lit up a backlash on social media. Within minutes, Brown capitulated: "Let me shut ... up!"
Charity workers on the front lines of the Ebola crisis were not amused by the post. A spokesperson for British charity Action Aid called the tweet “thoughtless” and suggested
Brown make amends with a substantial donation to the fight against Ebola, WENN reported.
"This is a global emergency about three countries struggling with a deadly disease, countries whose health systems are under immense strain. This is obviously nothing to do with population control but is a serious, deadly situation,” Jane Moyo told the World Entertainment News Network.
A Red Cross spokesman told WENN Brown may be putting further lives in danger: "There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, however the highly infectious virus can be prevented from spreading by following infection control procedures,” Henry Makiwa said. “Statements to the contrary are not only inaccurate, but also risk having a negative impact on the large-scale and life-saving response."
The Ebola crisis has claimed more than 4,000 lives in West Africa so far this year. The World Health Organization is calling Ebola the biggest health crisis of the modern era, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, as well as hospitals, the scientific community, and healthcare workers, are working tirelessly to contain the spread of the virus.
