Chris Christie could step into a whole new realm after his term as governor of New Jersey ends, as he’s being considered as Mike Francesa’s replacement on sports talk radio after reportedly turning down an offer to be U.S. labor secretary.
Christie is on the list to take host Francesa’s place on New York’s WFAN, according to The Washington Post.
“I would certainly at least want to consider [Christie],” said Mark Chernoff, WFAN’s program director and the vice president of its parent company CBS Radio New York, according to The Washington Post. “If he’s interested and we’re interested, it’s worth pursuing.”
This news came after President Donald Trump reportedly offered Christie a position as labor secretary after a lunch meeting last week, which the New Jersey governor turned down, according to Politico.
Christie has been on sports talk radio in the past. In the past year, he’s appeared on WFAN’s “Boomer and Carton” show more than 10 times to talk sports.
He’s also appeared on television to talk sports, with his most recent appearance being on SportsNet New York, where he said the Phillies “suck,” calling their fans “angry, bitter” people, The Washington Post noted.
“The Phillies suck, let’s just start with that,” Christie said, according to The Hill. “They’re from Philadelphia, they’re an awful team, they’re an angry, bitter fan base and it’s not safe for civilized people to go to Citizen’s Bank Park if you want to root for the other team.”
This also comes at a time where Christie’s next political move is under anticipation, with some still believing he’ll eventually join Trump’s administration in some role, despite withdrawing from consideration for the labor secretary position, according to NorthJersey.com.
Francesa will leave the show by the end of the year, just a few weeks before Christie’s term as governor comes to an end.
Christie has been on record talking about a career in sports broadcasting at some point in the future.
“As my son said — he said, ‘I can’t believe I’ve been listening to you talk about sports my entire life and that someone might actually pay you to do that.’ He said, ‘I can’t imagine how great that would be for you,’” Christie said while on the SNY cable network just days ago, according to NorthJersey.com.
“And so, yeah, that’s certainly one of the things that I hope I’ll have a chance to consider when I get out and stop being governor,” he added.
