Chris Christie was not picked as Donald Trump's vice president and the New Jersey governor is reportedly "livid" about the decision.
John McCormack of
The Weekly Standard wrote Sunday that he overheard a conversation that Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort had with an unknown person that confirmed Christie's hurt feelings.
"The man, whom I couldn't identify, suggested that Pence was a smart pick and Gingrich would've been a disaster," McCormack wrote. "'Christie was livid, right?' the man said at one point. 'Yeah,' Manafort replied."
Christie, along with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, was among the final choices for Trump before the presumptive Republican presidential nominee picked Indiana Gov. Mike Pence to be his running mate.
The Washington Post reported that Christie apparently made his feelings known Monday, pointing to a Twitter post made in response to a speech the governor gave to the Michigan delegation at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
But
CNN reported that Christie also told the Michigan delegation Monday that Pence was an "outstanding" vice presidential candidate and that the "big mouth in Congress" jab was actually a dig at Gingrich.
"Mike Pence is a great guy," Christie said. "And I am really relieved that Donald Trump picked a governor to be his running mate. He needs someone with him who has governed, who knows how to govern."
CNN stated that Christie was "coy" when some in the Michigan delegation said they hoped that Trump would name him attorney general if he wins the presidential election in November.
"We'll see what life brings, you know?" Christie said, according to CNN. "Life for me has been a pretty big roller coaster for the last 15 years, so I'm just going to strap in, hang on, and see where it takes me next."
Christie was one of Trump's early endorsers, throwing his support behind the real estate mogul in late February after ending his own run for the presidency. Christie was at times mocked on social media as Trump's lackey.
