Chrissy Teigen has opened up about her decision to get sober. The model made headlines after revealing she had not had a drink in four weeks and on Wednesday explained that it was all because of Holly Whitaker’s book, "Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol."
"One month ago, on my birthday, I got this book from my doctor and friend," Teigen divulged on her Instagram story. "I was done with making an a-- of myself in front of people (I’m still embarrassed), tired of day drinking and feeling like s–t by 6, not being able to sleep," she continued. "I have been sober ever since and even if you can’t see yourself doing it or just plain don’t want to, it is still an incredible read."
Teigen has previously admitted to struggling with alcohol and although it is unclear when she began drinking heavily, it may have to do with having a miscarriage in October. She and husband John Legend, who share Luna, 4, and Miles, 2, had been expecting their third child but Teigen lost the unborn baby.
"We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before," Teigen captioned a heartbreaking black-and-white Instagram photo of herself sitting in a hospital bed with tears streaming down her face.
This was not the only obstacle Teigen has faced. She has been open about suffering severe postpartum depression following the birth of Luna and in a 2018 interview with Women's Health admitted it drove her to drink.
"After Luna, I was drinking too much," Teigen recalled. "I wasn’t eating as much because I was full from drinking. I wasn’t being good to my body. I remember being so bruised from nothing."
Teigen began to take antidepressants and attended a wellness retreat which helped her change her perspective.
"It’s like, what could be more important than mental health?" she said. "What’s more important than being proud of yourself and doing the best you can for your body?"
