Chrysler is offering free college tuition to employees working at its Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck, and Fiat dealerships, the company announced Monday.
CNN Money reported that 118,000 workers across the U.S. will be eligible for the program, which is offered in conjunction with Strayer University's Degrees@Work program.
A bachelor's degree at Strayer normally costs $42,000, excluding books, but the auto company said that its employees enrolling in the program will not pay a penny in enrollment fees, tuition, books, or other expenses.
"What we're trying to do is make it a zero-cost deal for these employees. Their college degree is 100-percent funded," said Al Gardner, CEO of the Chrysler brand in North America.
The program does require each of its 2,400 dealerships to pay a flat fee to participate, but that fee will remain the same regardless of how many employees enroll.
"Strayer has negotiated a deal that makes it very reasonable and I would be incredibly surprised if a dealer says, I can't afford to opt into it. A dealer is going to look at this, understand the value proposition and opt in," Gardner added.
The program is designed to be flexible enough for working people, and offers associates', bachelors', and masters' degrees.
Gardner said that the decision to offer such a program was easy, as it will decrease the amount of turnover among its base of employees. This, in turn, will drive down costs.
