Churro Rats are the newest viral New York City rodents after a video of them duking it out over dinner hit the internet this week, reminding city dwellers of beloved Pizza Rat from two years ago.
Video of the churro-chomping rats dueling on what appeared to be the tracks of a New York subway was posted on Monday and has received thousands of views on YouTube since.
"As we can see in the video above, two rough NYC rodents found themselves a tasty fried snack. And honestly, who wouldn't want a churro on the subway," Mashable writer Christine Wang reported. "But the challenge is — there are two rats and only one churro."
"And these rats are not about to share with each other. So begins a ruthless rat race for the perfect subway meal. To make the video even better, the strains of a dramatic acoustic guitar can be heard in the background, providing excellent ambiance for this underground battle," Wang continued.
Ben Yakas, of Gothamist.com, wrote that the churro battle could resemble a scheme "that forces less privileged members of the same species to fight each other for crumbs as an express train of 'progress' runs them over."
"This struggle has never been more clearly articulated by rats who were caught on camera by a bored human waiting for their train than in the video below, in which two rats turn on each other for the meager scraps of an indifferent god who was probably running late for work and couldn't bother finding a garbage can," Yakas wrote.
"It's sad because rats are usually so cooperative, and because those subway churros are really not worth fighting over," he added.
The video is reminiscent of the 2015 clip of a New York City rodent dubbed Pizza Rat carrying away a slice, which garnered more than 9.7 million views on YouTube.
"No matter that the slice is way bigger than Pizza Rat and at any minute the rodent could be squashed by scampering humans who are also just trying to get to their destination," wrote CNN's Lisa Respers France. "Pizza Rat was on a mission."
