Cocaine Breast Implants: Woman Arrested for Smuggling at Spain Airport

By    |   Friday, 15 August 2014 05:43 PM EDT

After allegedly trying to smuggle 3.7 pounds of cocaine in her breast implants, a Venezuelan woman was arrested this month by Madrid police in Spain.

The 43-year-old woman, who was not identified, was acting suspiciously when narcotics agents were doing routine screenings. Female agents who frisked her noticed that her breasts were oddly shaped, the New York Daily News reported.

CNN reported that the searching agent also found bloodied bandages under the woman’s breasts and the incisions were visible.

The woman was taken to a hospital where surgeons removed her breast implants, which contained about $2.5 million worth of cocaine, the UK Mirror reported. CNN estimated the value closer to $35,000 per pound, which would be about $129,000.

The incident occurred earlier in August, but the Mirror said authorities just released information about the event this week.

A New York plastic surgeon told the Daily News that warnings have gone out about such events during the last few years.

“There were alerts put out several years ago about concerns about terrorists using breast implants as a way to move bombs, so it's one of those things in the plastic surgery community we are aware of," Dr. Matthew Schulman said. “It's probably done more often than people realize.”

Schulman told the Daily News that the procedure can be dangerous because he doubted it would be done in sterile environments, and also the body could absorb cocaine if there was a leak, which would probably kill the individual.

The woman arrived in Madrid’s international airport on a flight from Colombia, an originating flight that raises suspicion because much of drug trafficking comes from that country.
