Neiman Marcus sold out of its $66 collard greens that come both precooked and frozen, and that price tag doesn’t even include shipping, a whopping $15.50.
The collard greens sold out just two days after they became the talk of the internet.
Neiman Marcus’ website describes the high-priced side dish as “seasoned with just the right amount of spices and bacon” and says they ship “fully cooked and frozen,” The Huffington Post reported.
The high-priced vegetables were met with surprise.
“I was like, Whaaaat?” said Nicole Taylor, author of “The Up South Cookbook,” The Washington Post noted. “A lot of things ran through my head. The first was, I need to call and tell my mom that they are selling collard greens for $80.”
“Unless you can’t get greens, and I don’t know anywhere in the U.S. where you can’t get greens anymore, you can get someone to cook them for you for less than $66,” said Nathalie Dupree, author of “Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking.” “Part of what’s so ludicrous is that people who could afford more didn’t have greens on Thanksgiving. Greens were saved for weekdays. My mother-in-law would never serve greens on Thanksgiving or on Sundays.”
The cost of the collard greens wasn’t the only thing that became a huge topic of discussion. Not everyone found the marked-up vegetable striking for monetary reasons alone. There were some who took offense to it, bringing the hammer down on the luxury retailer’s “appropriation of food culture,” The Huffington Post noted.
“Collard greens are a staple of southern cooking and they’re a staple in many black households,” said Danielle Belton, managing editor of The Root, CBS News noted. “It could be part of soul food. It could be part of a holiday meal. In my household, it was a special soul food that we had together as a family. It’s just so closely identified with black southern culture that it seems kind of odd to take something that only costs a few dollars in the grocery store and somehow charge $66.”
Despite the internet’s eruption over the greens, Neiman Marcus has become known for doing things like this, especially during the holidays.
In this year’s Neiman Marcus “Christmas Book,” they’re selling other baffling over-priced items, including a “Reversible Sable Fur Vest and Puffer Jacket” for $16,500 and a “Vintage Electric Bike” for $6,995, CBS News noted.
The collard greens offering sparked incredulous responses on Twitter.
