A college party ended abruptly when the floor crashed into the apartment below, leaving many with minor injuries in Denton, Texas.
University of North Texas student Abiola Busari, who hosted the homecoming party, fell through the floor of his third-story apartment with numerous other attendees just before 2 a.m. Sunday, WFAA-TV reported.
Denton Fire Department Capt. Brian Glenn told WFAA-TV that the floor's collapse set off the second floor sprinkler system. Glenn said all of the apartment's occupants were evacuated without sustaining serious injuries.
Glenn told the television station that about 30 students were dancing in the third-floor apartment when the floor gave way.
"TV's, computers, just everything. Everything you need for college is gone," Carley Carroll, a student who lived on the second floor directly below the unit that collapsed, told WFAA-TV.
The Denton Record-Chronicle reported that the building was evacuated and no one was transported to the hospital for treatment. About 50 residents of The Ridge apartment complex, which services mostly students, were displaced, the newspaper said.
The Ridge's general manager Pamela Smith told the Record-Chronicle that displaced students were able to stay at the Best Western Premier Crown Chase Inn & Suites and would be reimbursed for expenses.
"At this time, the university has offered assistance to about 30 UNT students who live at The Ridge, a private facility in the city of Denton," a representative from the University of North Texas told WFAA-TV.
"The students being helped were impacted by an apartment building closure after a third floor in the facility collapsed. The assistance being offered includes access to short-term temporary housing, meals, and advocacy with faculty for any issues related to their classes or study (i.e. needing books or computer access)."
A structural engineer is investigating the building.
Some attending the party posted pictures and video on social media.
