Colorado Sinkhole Swallows Police SUV as Sergeant Escapes

By    |   Friday, 05 June 2015 01:28 PM EDT

A Colorado police officer and his SUV were engulfed by a giant sinkhole that opened early Friday as he drove down the road.

Sgt. Greg Miller, a nightshift patrol supervisor for the Sheridan Police Department, suffered minor injuries in the accident, Chief of Police Mark Campbell told Colorado’s 9 News.

"The officer is doing okay. He was just driving along and the road opened up around the car. The car dropped into the hole," Campbell told 9 News. "One of the airbags deployed; he has some minor injuries to his face and arms. He couldn’t get out of the car because the sinkhole surrounded the door, so he couldn’t open the door. He went out through a window, crawled up on the roof, and then he had to go back to the car and the crawl up out of the hole."

Campbell told the news station that the hole has continued to get deeper, and because of an exposed gas pipeline, they were waiting for a local power company to turn gas off before attempting to get the car out.

"Right now, what we’re concerned about is the hole has gotten deeper since we’ve been here, so it’s not a stable situation," Campbell told 9 News.

Miller told Denver’s Fox 31, "I was on basic patrol driving down the road and the next I know there’s a big bam. And I realize I’m down in this hole with water rushing around me. Dirt walls. And the only thing I can think of is I better get out of here."

So far, it’s unclear what exactly caused the sinkhole to open, 9 News said.
