NBC canceled the quirky comedy "Community" on Friday, and devoted fans took to social media mourn the loss.

The comedy about community college students starred Joel McHale, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Alison Brie, as well as John Oliver and Jonathan Banks of "Breaking Bad" as recurring characters.

NBC also canceled dramas "Revolution," "Crisis," "Believe," and the comedy "Growing Up Fisher," about a blind dad. It renewed "Hannibal" for a third season.

"Community" never attracted a large audience, but enjoyed a rabid Internet following.

Star Joel McHale tweeted his thanks to the fans.

Even the return of creator Dan Harmon for Season 5 couldn't save the show. The finale garnered 2.9 million viewers and a 1.0 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic.

Though NBC has said goodbye, the show could find new life through another medium. Sony Pictures TV, which produces the show, is shopping it to cable or a streaming service like Netflix. Comedy Central already bought the show in syndication, while Hulu owns the digital rights.

Fans created a Twitter hashtag, #Sixseasonsandamovie, which references a Season 2 episode in which Abed (Danny Pudi) and Jeff (McHale) discuss the short-lived NBC series "The Cape," and many also used #RIPCommunity.

But if this is the end...
