Coney Island Sharks Cause Havoc ... in Applebee's Aquarium

Coney Island's Applebee's restaurant in Brooklyn, N.Y., had to remove two of its sharks from its 5,000-gallon aquarium on Friday, after one died having collided with a Ferris wheel inside the tank and another ate three other fish that were not on the menu.

During what the New York Daily News described as a "killing spree" that shook Applebee employees, a Blacktip shark named Zane devoured three Lookdown fish and had to be removed before it could target more of its fish tank companions Friday.

The $4,000 shark was subsequently taken to another aquarium in aptly named Fishkill, N.Y.

The sharks "were in shock. We moved them in too quickly," Applebee’s owner Zane Tankel told the New York Daily News. "They went from being in an ocean to being in a tank. They were all disoriented."

Blacktip sharks are generally considered to be docile according to Tankel.

"He was swimming around on the top and boom! He ate the whole thing," said Applebee's general manager Armando Rumayor referring to one of the fish killed by the Blacktip shark.

According to Rumayor, Zane had received a lion-share of herring Friday at 10 a.m., which apparently did nothing to curb his appetite.

Apple Planet's reality TV show "Tanked" reportedly captured the killings on camera, though the video was not yet available online.

Hours later, a Whitetip shark collided with a three-foot Wonder Wheel replica inside the cage, leading to its untimely demise.

"His sonar system didn't work well," Tankel joked.

Contrary to popular belief, most sharks do not have or use sonar.

The Whitetip reportedly cost Tankel $500.

The owner plans to replace the Whitetip soon, describing it as a major attraction for customers, and hopes that the Blacktip shark named Zane will be able to be returned at some point considering it was a $4,000 investment.

"We are concerned about his health. The sharks are a big investment," Tankel said of Zane.

"It is easy for me to a manage people. But now I have to manage fish, too!" Rumayor added.
