A stabbing at Cornell University on Sunday left one student from Ithaca College dead and another injured.
Anthony Nazaire, 19, a sophomore business administration major, was killed in the stabbing, which happened around 2 a.m. Sunday during a large brawl after a student-led event at the student union, The Associated Press reported.
"I hope they get caught and justice is done," Nazaire’s mother, Katia Toussaint, told the New York Daily News. "I didn’t send my son to school to get murdered."
Nazaire was pronounced dead at Cayuga Medical Center. The Ithaca Police Department recovered the weapon and launched a homicide investigation, according to The Cornell Daily Sun, the university's student-run newspaper.
The newspaper said the stabbing happened after an event hosted by Omega Psi Phi called O-Week Turnup: Workqowt Edition. Several hundred students attended the event, according to reports. Surveillance videos showed some bystanders recording the fight on their phones.
A campus gathering was planned for 4 p.m. Monday to reflect on the death of Nazaire, according to The Ithacan.
"I hope you will hold these students — along with their families, friends, classmates, and professors — in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult and tragic time," University President Tom Rochon stated.
Nazaire grew up in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School in Canarsie.
"He was one of the most ambitious and determined and hardworking young males I’ve ever worked with in 10 years," Emilia Wiles, Nazaire’s college prep counselor, told the Daily News. "He was one of the sweetest, kindest, brightest young men. He was the happiest kid you’ve ever met."
