'Couple finds gold coins in Gold Country' is the likely headline in northern California newspapers as word of an incredible gold find begins circulating through the state, despite the fact that it occurred more than a year ago.
The couple, who did not disclose their identity, were reportedly walking their dog along their rural Gold Country property when they stumbled across the gold, contained in deteriorating metal containers beneath the shadow of an old tree.
According to David Hall, the co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana who recently authenticated the find, nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition,
the Associated Press reported.

Though the gold itself is worth approximately $27,000 if melted down and sold by weight, due to the rarity and condition of the coins, the value of the find is estimated at upwards of $10 million, with some pieces potentially fetching nearly $1 million apiece, the AP noted.
"I don't like to say once-in-a-lifetime for anything, but you don't get an opportunity to handle this kind of material, a treasure like this, ever," said veteran numismatist Don Kagin, who is representing the finders. "It's like they found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow."
Numismatics is the study or collection of currency, and is primarily associated with coins.
According to Kagin, the couple wished to remain anonymous so to discourage modern day prospectors from rushing to the outskirts of their property in the hopes of making the next big find and also to prevent those who knew them from treating them differently due to their new found wealth.
"Their concern was this would change the way everyone else would look at them, and they're pretty happy with the lifestyle they have today," he said.
The only details the numismatist would say is that the couple was middle-aged and had lived on the rural land for several years before the coins were found.
The anonymous couple reportedly plans to sell the coins through Amazon, putting some of the money towards outstanding bills and giving some to local charities, while keeping just a handful of the coins for themselves as keepsakes.
