Crenshanda Williams, a 43-year-old 911 operator in Houston, Texas, was charged last week for allegedly hanging up on thousands of 911 calls between October 2015 and March of this year.
Thousands of calls for which she was the operator lasted 20 seconds or less, which aroused suspicions about her methods of handling calls, KPRC-TV reported. Williams was put on leave after police said she told them "she often hangs up on calls that have not been connected because she did not want to talk to anyone at that time." She was fired Aug. 4.
In one instance, Williams disconnected a call about motorists driving recklessly and was recorded as saying, “Ain’t nobody got time for this. For real,” KPRC-TV reported.
Williams was charged Oct. 5 and faces two counts of interference with an emergency telephone call, which is a class A misdemeanor that could mean up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine for each count if she is convicted.
Reports of victims who were hung up on by Williams are now being discovered through the investigation. Buster Pendley called 911 on March 1 when his wife became unconscious, KPRC-TV reported. After Williams reportedly hung up on him, he had to call 911 again to get help. His wife was fortunate to survive the incident.
Another victim was not so lucky. Williams allegedly hung up on Hua Li for trying to report a robbery in progress, and the store manager was shot and killed while waiting for help after a second 911 call. Li told the news station, "Nobody, nobody is going to help you. You’re on your own" if 911 is not there to help.
