Former "American Idol" runner-up Crystal Bowersox came out as a bisexual on Twitter in November, responding to public curiosity about her sexuality as her new song “Coming Out for Christmas” debuted.
The song, which is about the difficulties people have coming out to their families about their sexuality, was inspired by some of Bowersox’s angst as she
struggled with her sexuality as a young person, the singer told Greg in Hollywood.

She wasn’t ready previously to talk about her sexuality, she told writer Greg Hernandez. “I was still kind of exploring myself and what I wanted out of life,” she said. “I was told from a young age that I was going to go to hell so it’s something I was working through at the time.”
Bowersox, who married Brian Walker in 2010, told Hernandez that she decided to be upfront about her sexuality in part because it might be helpful to young people who are struggling.
“Some kids would rather die than just be who they are which is why a portion of the proceeds, if you buy the single through New York Rock Exchange, go to The Trevor Project,” Bowersox told Greg in Hollywood. “I think (Trevor) is such an important thing to have. Kids need to learn to love and accept themselves.”
Her song, she told Hernandez, is about the importance of accepting others.
“The song is about being with your family regardless of sexual orientation and you could even throw political views in there,” she said. “It’s more important to be with your family than to just argue over something as silly as that. The song is about practicing tolerance and acceptance and being with family.”
Along with “coming out” about being bisexual, Bowersox used her Twitter account to announce another change.
