"Cyborg" Santos' gruesome skull fracture during a Mixed Martial Arts fight in London is just one of a cage fighter's many job risks. He literally had his forehead dented in and still managed a slight smile at the hospital.
On Saturday, Michael Page dropped Santos, first name Evangelista, with a flying knee to the head during the second round of the welterweight fight, boosting his undefeated record to 11-0,
ESPN reported.
"I'm under observation now and will have surgery in the United States," Santos told MMA Fighting, according to ESPN. "I had a serious injury, but Bellator (the fight's promoter) is giving me all the support I need."
His ex-wife Cris "Cyborg" Justino posted gruesome images of the injury on Instagram, telling her followers that doctors said the injury could easily have been life threatening and they are still concerned about possible brain swelling.
MMA commentator Joe Rogan called the injury the worst he's ever seen.
A
GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Santos. It has raised more than $18,500 by mid-day Monday.
Meanwhile,
MMA Junkie reported that Bellator President Scott Coker confirmed that the promotion will pay for Santos' medical bills.
"Bellator representatives have been present with him at the hospital throughout this process, and we are taking care of any medical bills that he incurs. In addition, we are going to go ahead and pay "Cyborg" his win bonus to help him find a little extra comfort throughout his recovery process, which we hope is a speedy one," Coker told MMA Junkie.
Page posted good wishes to his opponent on Twitter.
