Cynthia Lennon, the first wife of the late Beatles star John Lennon and mother of Julian Lennon, died Wednesday. She was 75.
Cynthia Lennon died at her home in Mallorca, Spain, after a short battle with cancer with
her son by her side, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Julian Lennon tweeted about his mother’s death.
Cynthia Lennon was married to John Lennon from 1962 to 1968. The couple met at art school in 1957 before The Beatles achieved worldwide fame. They divorced in 1968 after Cynthia Lennon discovered her
husband’s affair with Yoki Ono, according to the BBC. John Lennon later married Yoko Ono. He was shot to death in 1980.
Beatles biographer Hunter Davies described Cynthia Lennon as quiet and reserved.
"She was not a hippy at all. I think it was the attraction of opposites between them. When they got together at art school everyone was amazed — she was seen as refined and reserved and nobody thought they would last," Davies said, according to the BBC.
After her marriage to John Lennon, Cynthia Lennon remarried three times and had various professional pursuits, including running her own bistro, working as a television interviewer, and designing
bed linen and paper products, The Telegraph reported.
Cynthia Lennon wrote two books about her life with John Lennon, 1980's “Twist of Lennon” and 1995's “John."
In addition to his Twitter tribute, Julian Lennon also posted a video to YouTube honoring his mother's life.
Former Beatle Ringo Starr tweeted his condolences.
Twitter users also expressed their sympathy.
