Darren Wilson, identified as the police officer who fatally shot Michael Brown, suffered a serious facial injury in a scuffle with teen just before the shooting, a source told media outlets Wednesday.
The source told
ABC News a hospital photo of Wilson's face, which has not been released to the public, shows the injury the officer suffered allegedly at the hands of Brown.
"The assistant (police) chief took him to the hospital, his face all swollen on one side," a source described as close to the Ferguson police administration told
Fox News Wednesday, adding that Wilson suffered an orbital eye socket fracture and was nearly beaten unconscious by Brown during the police car struggle.

The source went on to tell Fox News that Brown and his friend Dorain Johnson started the altercation by ignoring Wilson's orders to move off a street because they were obstructing traffic.
"They ignored him and the officer started to get out of the car to tell them to move," the source told Fox News. "They shoved him right back in, that's when Michael Brown leans in and starts beating Officer Wilson in the head and the face."
The source's account was the first to describe Wilson's injuries in detail. Wilson eventually shot and killed Brown near his squad car, setting off more than a week of protests in Ferguson.
Wilson was on paid administrative leave as St. Louis County prosecutors started presenting evidence to a grand jury on the case Wednesday, reported
KMOV-TV and ABC News. Any indictment may not come until October, prosecutor Robert McCulloch told ABC News.
Attorney General Eric Holder visited Ferguson on Wedneday, where he met with residents and Brown's family among other stops, according to the Washington Post.
"I understand that mistrust," Holder told a citizens group during a stop at Florissant Valley Community College.
"I am the attorney general of the United States, but I am also a black man. I think about my time in Georgetown — a nice neighborhood of Washington — and I am running to a picture movie at about 8 o'clock at night. I am running with my cousin. Police car comes driving up, flashes his lights, yells ‘where you going? Hold it!' I say, 'Whoa, I’m going to a movie.'"
