Darryl Hamilton, Former MLB Star, Killed in Possible Murder-Suicide

By    |   Tuesday, 23 June 2015 08:54 AM EDT

Darryl Hamilton, the former Major League Baseball player turned broadcast analyst, was killed in Houston over the weekend in what law enforcement officials are calling a murder-suicide.

Hamilton, 50, and 44-year-old Monica Jordan, were both found dead Sunday afternoon inside a Pearland, Texas, house after local police were called to the residence on a disturbance report, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Authorities discovered Hamilton's body shot to death near the front entryway of the home. Jordan's body was found in another part of the residence with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Chronicle noted.

The couple's 13-month-old son was also found in the home unharmed and turned over to Texas' Child Protective Services.

"All of us at Major League Baseball are shocked and saddened by this tragedy," Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement, according to The New York Times. "He was a talented and personable individual, and we were proud to call him a member of the baseball family."

Hamilton played 13 seasons in the majors, for Milwaukee, Texas, San Francisco, Colorado, and the New York Mets. The Times said that Hamilton was the first batter in a Major League regular season interleague game in June 1997 when he was a member of the Giants. He singled against the Texas Rangers.

"Darryl always had an upbeat presence," Bobby Valentine, who managed Hamilton when he played for the New York Mets, told the New York Daily News. "He had a smile when he entered every room. His smile was contagious."

It appears Jordan had a previous arson charge against her stemming from a 2008 altercation with her now ex-husband. She pleaded guilty to burning down a house and garage in Brazoria County because she reportedly believed her spouse at the time was cheating on her, according to the Chronicle.

"The circumstances were severe, the circumstances were very severe," Brazoria County District Attorney Jeri Yenne told the Chronicle. "I have spoken to my staff every now and then, when we're talking about an arson, I would talk about this case."
