News of Madden’s death came as another 1970s TV star also died:
Russell Johnson, who played the Professor on “Gilligan’s Island,” also died Thursday morning.
Although best-known for his role on “The Partridge Family,” Madden also guest-starred on numerous TV shows and was on “Laugh-In.” He showed up regularly on “Alice” as customer Earl Hicks.
Madden also wrote a book about his life as a stand-up comic and actor, “Reuben on Wry.” In 2008 in an interview about the book, he told Marshall Terrill on BookBuzz, “What did I like about playing Reuben? The money! Any TV actor who answers differently is probably lying. Face it, it's not exactly Shakespeare. ‘The role of a lifetime.’ Did I say that? Actually, unless my calendar is lying to me ... it was ‘the role of 4 years’ of what's left of my lifetime.”
Classic shows like “The Partridge Family” and “Gilligan’s Island,” shown for years after the shows went off the air, have a spot in the hearts of many who took to the Internet to express their sorrow over the loss.
