David Cassidy, '70s Heartthrob, Charged With Drunken Driving in NY

By    |   Thursday, 22 August 2013 10:53 AM EDT

David Cassidy, the former 1970s teen idol, was arrested early Wednesday in Schodack, N.Y., after reportedly failing to dim his car lights at a police checkpoint and subsequently blowing a .10 in the Breathalyzer device, according to local authorities. The legal limit to drive in New York State is .08.

The 63-year-old Cassidy, who starred on the 1970's TV series "The Partridge Family," and consequently had his face plastered on magazine covers, lunchboxes, and millions of record albums some 40 years ago, was charged with drunken driving, CNN reported.

Arrested at 12:08 a.m., Cassidy was released on $2,500 bail from Rensselaer County Jail three hours later, District Attorney Richard McNally told the Times Union.

Cassidy is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 6.

During the police stop, Cassidy jokingly asked town patrolman Tom Jones "What's new, pussycat?" as he rolled down his window, the Times Union reported.

The remark was a reference to the song sung by the famous Welsh singer, also named Tom Jones, whose swinging hips and suggestive ballads made many a women swoon in the 1960s.

Jones, a young rookie on the force, did not get the reference.

"I did not know who he was or what he meant by that," Jones told the Times Union on Wednesday.

Jones added that during the stop Cassidy "was very polite and courteous and joking around despite the situation."

This isn't Cassidy's first run-in with the law in recent years.

In February 2011, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. resident entered a no contest plea on a drunken driving charge following an arrest the previous November.

Cassidy was subsequently sentenced to one year probation and had his driver's license suspended for six months. The DUI conviction also forced him to attend a DUI school, pay a $500 fine, and serve 50 hours of community service for his irresponsible behavior behind the wheel.

Cassidy, who played Keith Partridge, the eldest of the television family, is the latest in a long line of celebrities who have been charged with drunken driving.

Recently, R&B singer-songwriter Miguel was arrested for DUI, and while she wasn't driving, Reese Witherspoon had a rather embarrassing encounter with cops when her husband was pulled over under suspicion of driving under the influence.
