David Hasselhoff Sign Thefts Turn Violent in Connecticut (Video)

By    |   Thursday, 22 August 2013 07:38 AM EDT

The string of David Hasselhoff sign thefts took a violent turn this week when a Connecticut Cumberland Farms clerk was hit and dragged by an SUV full of thieves trying to swipe two of the life-size cardboard cutouts.

The 36-year-old employee remains in critical condition after trying to stop the robbers from taking two of the Hasselhoff iced coffee signs from the front of the Shelton, Conn., convenience store Tuesday.

Police say a black SUV with three people inside pulled up to the Cumberland Farms store around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, and a man got out and cut down two of the signs from a light pole. The male employee reportedly approached the vehicle to try and get the ads back but was thrown backwards and dragged as the thieves sped away, NBC Connecticut reported.

A 19-year-old man came forward and admitted involvement in the crime, according to a posting Wednesday on the Shelton Police Department's Facebook page. The suspect was reportedly driving the SUV, but no arrests have yet been made.

The cutouts featuring the former "Baywatch" star have been popular targets for thieves, with around 550 taken from the chain's various Northeast stores in the last couple weeks, Cumberland Farms brand strategist Kate Ngo told CBS News.

The ads for iced coffee are meant to be tongue-in-cheek and show Hasselhoff cheesily posing with a beverage called "Iced Hoffee." Earlier this summer, Hasselhoff ran on a beach and sang a song called "Thirsty for Love" in a commercial spot for the drink.

Hasselhoff himself took to Twitter to ask for prayers of support for the injured store clerk.

Here's the companion commercial that goes along with the life-size Hasselhoff cutouts.
