"Days of Our Lives" actor Francisco San Martin died by suicide, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, the Independent reported. He was 39.
San Martin, born in Mallorca, Spain, grew up in Montana, the New York Post reported. He began his acting career in children's theater, later trying his hand at modeling after his family moved back to Spain. He was cast in minor roles in several Spanish plays and TV shows before moving back to the U.S., where he rose to prominence after appearing in "Days of Our Lives" in 2011 for six months.
In the show, San Martin played the role of Dario Hernandez, a petty thief who comes to Salem to investigate a cold case. San Martin later left the show for a role in Argentina, and the character was recast with Jordi Vilasuso, who played Hernandez from 2016-17.
In 2017, San Martin joined "The Bold and the Beautiful" as Mateo, a groundskeeper who becomes involved in one of Sheila's schemes at Forrester Manor. He also appeared in "Jane the Virgin," starring Gina Rodriguez, portraying Fabian Regalo del Cielo. San Martin appeared in seasons 3 and 4, playing a character involved in a brief and tumultuous relationship with Jane.
After news of his death, "Days of Our Lives" star Camila Banus paid tribute to San Martin on Instagram.
"Pepe, what can I say but I love you and rest in peace, my friend," she wrote, according to Forbes. "My only witness that pau sang happy birthday to me in the middle of a concert in Hollywood, you couldn't believe it."
She added, "Love you mucho mucho mucho; I wish I had told you more."
