Debbie Wasserman Schultz fired an IT staffer Tuesday, a day after he was arrested at Dulles International Airport on his way out of the country.
Imran Awan, 37, was arrested on bank fraud charges for "allegedly attempting to get a loan from the Congressional Federal Credit Union on a rental property by claiming it as his primary residence," USA Today reported.
He was detained at the airport, where he was attempting to fly to Pakistan. He reportedly had a return trip scheduled for January.
Awan has pleaded not guilty.
David Damron, a spokesperson for Rep. Schultz, D-Fla., issued a statement on the matter.
“Awan previously served as an employee in our office, but his services have been terminated," he said.
According to an affidavit, Awan's attempt to get the loan is believed to be part of a "scheme to defraud" the CFCU by he and his wife, Hina Alvi, according to The Associated Press.
Awan's attorney, Chris Gowen, says his client was cleared to travel and even went as far as to alert the House that he planned on traveling to Pakistan to see family.
Awan has been released from custody and is currently being supervised as part of a program.
Alvi, Awan's wife, was reportedly allowed to fly to Pakistan in March and has not yet returned, though she has a flight set for September, according to the AP.
