Deep Blue Great White Shark May Be Largest Ever Recorded

By    |   Thursday, 11 June 2015 06:14 AM EDT

A great white shark nicknamed Deep Blue is creating a social media reading frenzy after Mexican researcher Mauricio Hoyos Padilla posted a new video clip of the huge 20-plus-foot animal on Facebook.

Deep Blue, believed to be one of the largest great white sharks ever recorded, was first featured during one of the Discovery Channel's recent "Shark Week" telecasts, according to Grind TV. The shark and Hoyos Padilla appeared to share a "high five" as it swam past the researcher's underwater cage.

Hoyos Padilla's video had been viewed more than 2.6 million times since it was posted this week. The video was also shared some 44,600 times, as well.

Hoyos Padilla said he found the clip on his computer this week, noting that it was from the Discovery shoot about 165 miles west of Ensenada, Baja California.

"After all, who wouldn't want to check out one of the largest white sharks ever videotaped, and the largest ever to grace curious cage divers at picturesque Guadalupe Island," said Grind TV's Pete Thomas about the video.

Discovery News noted Wednesday that Hoyos Padilla participated in a 2012 filming in Mexico when Deep Blue, which appeared to be pregnant, swam toward the film crew's boat. The shark was so large that it appeared it might upend the boat but it circled the vessel several times before researchers placed a tag on its back.

The footage appeared in a "Shark Week 2014" telecast titled "Jaws Strike Back," filmed in partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Video of the huge shark left some on social media in awe.
