A Delta Air Lines passenger with multiple sclerosis was reportedly tied to a wheelchair after a flight because the air carrier didn’t have the correct chair to accommodate her.
Maria Saliagas and her husband have a tradition to take a trip to Europe every year, and though she's been battling MS, that hasn't stopped them, Saliagas told WSB-TV.
In years past, Delta accommodated her by providing a special wheelchair with straps that allowed her to sit upright, she said. That reportedly didn’t happen this year.
Her son, Nathan Saliagas, said that when the April 1 flight from Atlanta arrived in Amsterdam, Delta employees didn’t have the proper chair.
“They took a dirty blanket and tied her forcefully with it and she has bruise marks on part of her arm because it was so tight and she started crying,” Nathan Saliagas said, WSB-TV reported.
The family is scheduled to return to Atlanta April 30.
When they complained to Delta, the airline offered them 20,000 free miles, but they would rather see a policy change within the company, the Saliagases said.
"We regret the perception our service has left on these customers," Delta said in a statement, WSB-TV reported. "We have reached out to them, not only to resolve their concerns, but also ensure that their return flight exceeds expectations."
