Demi Lovato has come out as nonbinary.
The singer announced the news on social media, sharing that they had the revelation while doing some "healing and self-reflective work."
"I want to take this moment to share something very personal with you," Lovato said in a heartfelt video posted on Instagram on Wednesday. "Over the past year and a half, I've been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I've had this revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I'll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them."
Lovato explained that identifying as nonbinary "best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression" and also "allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and am still discovering."
The "Sorry Not Sorry" hitmaker shot to fame in 2008, when they were cast in Disney's "Camp Rock." They went on to release several hit albums and received two Grammy nominations. Their career has been successful, but being cast in the limelight has put pressure on Lovato.
"I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you," Lovato captioned their video. "You’ve seen the good, the bad, and everything in-between. Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the camera."
Lovato explained that they were "still learning and coming into myself," adding that, "I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson."
The pop icon has been candid about their struggles with drugs, mental health, and eating disorders, but explained that sharing that they are non-binary "now opens another level of vulnerability for me."
"I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones," Lovato added. "Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way."
Earlier this year Lovato revealed to Glamour that they were realizing "how queer" they really were. In 2020 they announced their engagement to Max Ehrich but called things off two months later. Lovato told Glamour that they felt "this sense of relief that I could live my truth."
Lovato explained that they now felt "too queer" to be with a cis man.
"I hooked up with a girl and was like, 'I like this a lot more.' It felt better. It felt right," they said. "Some of the guys I was hanging out with—when it would come time to be sexual or intimate, I would have this kind of visceral reaction. Like, ‘I just don’t want to put my mouth there,'" they continued. “It wasn’t even based on the person it was with. I just found myself really appreciating the friendships of those people more than the romance, and I didn’t want the romance from anybody of the opposite sex."
