Denard Robinson, running back for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his into a retention pond early Sunday.
Officials determined that the 25-year-old footballer wasn't impaired and won't face DUI charges,
The Florida Times-Union reported. An officer responded to the scene around 4:20 a.m. and noticed Robinson and a female passenger, 29-year-old Marissa O. Staples of Cincinnati, both appeared to be asleep.
The officer reportedly knocked on the window of the Chevrolet Impala to wake the two. Robinson reportedly opened his eyes but then went back to sleep. Staples rolled the window down and said, "What's up?"
Staples refused to exit the vehicle and was removed by the officer while Robinson continued to sleep, the newspaper reported. The officer returned to wake Robinson, who exited through the passenger door because the driver's door was submerged.
Robinson posted a statement on Twitter acknowledging the accident and expressing gratitude that no one was hurt.
"I should not have been driving that late or when I was that tired, but again, I'm just glad that everyone was safe. God Bless," he wrote.
Robinson apparently attempted to make a wide turn when the vehicle went over the sidewalk and down the embankment,
WJZX-TV reported.
"There were no skid marks indicating the driver attempted to stop the vehicle before the crash," according to the crash report obtained by the station.
The Jaguars released a statement saying, "The team is aware that running back Denard Robinson was involved in a single-car accident over the weekend and is thankful that nobody was injured."
Twitter users shared mixed reactions.
