Dermot Mulroney's Scar: Actor Reveals How He Got His Signature Facial Mark

Dermot Mulroney has starred in more than 65 films, and in all of them he sports his signature feature: a scar running north over his lip. In a new interview with the Chicago Sun-Times Sunday magazine Splash, he explains how he got it, and how it's become an asset to his career.

"It was a long time ago, so I’ve always had it," he said. "I was 3 and a half and I was carrying a dish for our pet rabbits. And I tripped and it broke, and I fell on it. I definitely remember that day, even though I was 3 years old. I don’t think about it or see it, but it’s always been there. It certainly has its place on my face, right below my right nostril. That’s where it belongs."

Currently, Mulroney and his rugged good looks are starring in NBC's new political thriller "Crisis," which follows hijackers who take over a school bus filled with the kids of Washington's elite. Mulroney plays a chaperone and parent on the hijacked bus, but he's also a secret ex-CIA agent.

Director Mark Piznarski praised Mulroney's talent and work ethic while filming the latest episode.

"He’s never late, he’s the first one on set, always prepared, gracious with receiving notes and collaborating," he told Splash. "He's a joy to work with. I wish all actors were like him."

While working on the project, Mulroney said he found himself reminiscing over his breakout role in the hit movie "My Best Friend's Wedding," co-starring Julia Roberts.

"One of the most memorable scenes for me is on that tour boat, where Julia and I go up and down the river under the bridges," he said. "Coming back here to shoot [Crisis], I’ll go by a stairway to an L where I know we shot a scene, or by a nightclub where we filmed. I’m always happening upon these locations that I shot at 16, 17 years ago, and I remember them like it was yesterday."

Since the breakout role, Mulroney has specifically avoided becoming typecast as an actor who can only do romantic comedies. He's sought out roles like a waterbed salesman in "About Schmidt" with Jack Nicholson, an oilman in "The Grey" with Liam Neeson, and even appeared on "The New Girl" sitcom with Zooey Deschanel.

In addition to filming "Crisis" in Chicago, Mulroney recently shot a movie called "Careful What You Wish For."
