Six Detroit police officers have been suspended amid a bribery investigation that is taking a deeper look into towing practices involving stolen cars.
The officers are facing allegations that they took bribes from collision shops and towing companies that provided them with money in exchange for work, the Detroit Free Press reported.
It’s alleged the six officers were making as much as $500 per bribe.
According to WXYZ Detroit, sources claim the companies involved went out to find stolen vehicles, then towed them back to their yards, providing them with more work. The officers were allegedly making their money from recovering the vehicles.
"As we understand one of the officers was assigned to an abandoned car detail," said Mark Diaz, president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, Fox 2 Detroit reported. "Another officer assigned to traffic enforcement. In general, the officers were in regular patrol capacities."
The officers have been suspended with pay, and it’s not yet clear whether or not they’ll be criminally charged.
“Anytime you have allegations, they are just that,” Diaz said, according to WXYZ Detroit. “Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Our officers will continue to go out and protect the public. That’s what we do.”
It's unclear it the six officers in question were working together, as they were each stationed at different precincts across the city, WXYZ noted.
