Devil on History Channel's 'The Bible' Resembles President Obama

By    |   Monday, 18 March 2013 11:01 AM EDT

Viewers of the History Channel's popular series 'The Bible,' were introduced on Sunday  to the devil, whose striking resemblance to President Barack Obama triggered an immediate social media response.

The black-hooded Satan is played by actor Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni and many of the show's 13 million-plus viewers took to Twitter to voice their shock and, depending on their political leaning, outrage or delight.

One of the first to make the connection was conservative political commentator Glenn Beck, who tweeted out Sunday night: "Anyone else think the Devil in #TheBible Sunday on History Channel looks exactly like That Guy?"

A flurry of similar tweets soon followed, later to be compiled by Buzzfeed.com:

"Watching The Bible series on the History channel and noticed the guy playing the role of satan, looks strikingly similar to Obama...#KREEPY," tweeted Matthew Gaudet.

"Oh my word....watching The History Channel's The Bible...does Satan look familiar to anyone else?," tweeted Leah Christie.

While some tweeters asked if there was a coincidence, others relished Satan's remarkable resemblance to Obama.

"Lmfao! The guy that plays Satan in the TV series "The Bible" looks exactly like Obama!" wrote Jake Elward.

"Wait....The Bible series used an actor who looked like Obama to play Satan? BAWAHAHAHA!! When art imitates life (or something like that)..." wrote sirsurfalot.

"Though I don't believe it was intentional, that whole Satan/Obama thing was hilarious," wrote Savannah.

Others however were critical.

"So, why does #TheBible Statan look like Obama?? Which right wing turd made Burnett do that?? 10-1 it was Glenn Beck. Why?? #disgraceful," wrote Matthew Koons.

The mini-series is divided into five two-hour episodes covering Genesis to Revelation and was produced of the husband-and-wife team of Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.

Both are devout Christians, with the English-born Burnett known for his work on "Survivor" and "Celebrity Apprentice" and the Irish-born Downey known for her role as the kind hearted angel, on the successful American TV series "Touched by an Angel."

The series, despite its modest $22 million budget, has an action film feel, with a lot of computer-generated scenes meant to wow audiences.

A scene in the HBO hit series "Game of Thrones" featured a decapitated head on a spike that resembled former President George W. Bush.

HBO later apologized for the incident and cancelled all future shipments of the DVD series in which the scene was included.

The History Channel has not responded to 'The Bible' Satan controversy yet.
