DirecTV's next generation cloud DVR service will allow subscribers to get 20 hours of recordings for up to 30 days, according to the tech website Engadget.
AT&T, which owns DirecTV, said its subscribers can get up to 100 hours of videos for 90 days for an extra $10 per month, if the measly 20 hours are not enough, Engadget reported.
TechCrunch reported that the revenue from AT&T's video business has been shrinking and the DirecTV updates should allow it to remain competitive. The website said AT&T's losses from traditional television are currently being offset by new customers to its Internet-driven DirecTV Now.
DirecTV Now added 312,000 more customers over the past quarter to reach 1.46 million total subscribers, TechCrunch wrote. Dish, DirecTV's rival, failed to offset its pay television losses this past earnings with 91,000 Sling TV additions, but its service is still head of AT&T in total subscribers, the website reported.
TechCrunch said that DirecTV Now is also revamping its app across platforms, allowing users to prioritize their most popular programs. The rollout became available this week and will be picked up by Android, Fire TV, and Roku devices in the weeks ahead.
"We changed up the look and feel of the app, putting your most-watched channels and favorite programs front and center," DirecTV Now said on its website Tuesday. "You can even view your current stream while browsing for something that you might want to watch next.
"… We've added more capacity so you can watch even more on-demand entertainment to your heart's desire. New episodes on select channels will be available on-demand after airing, so you don't have to worry about setting up a recording prior," the DirecTV Now statement continued.
AT&T Communications chief executive John Donovan said Tuesday at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit in San Francisco that another plan from AT&T on the horizon is a version of the DirecTV satellite service delivered via broadband, but different from DirecTV Now, USA Today reported.
This will go along with its offerings U-Verse fiber-delivered pay-television service and the recently-announced AT&T Watch, USA Today reported.
